Ep 101: Brody Leven and Kelly Halpin

Brody Leven is a professional adventure skier who prefers climbing up to skiing down. His ski and biking adventures have taken him all over the world, from Uganda to New Zealand, from Svalbard to Argentina, and all over the North American continent. Brody cares deeply for the terrain and environment where he practices his craft and spends half of his time working to protect public land and the environment. He addresses Congress on these subjects each year, attended the Paris Climate Conference (COP21) in 2015, and generously donates time to Protect Our Winters, among other organizations. Kelly Halpin returns to the podcast, previously joining us for episode 79. She is an illustrator who contributed to the NonProphet Strength manual and an accomplished mountain athlete. In 2019 she completed the Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Link-up in 23hrs 44min (solo), set the FKT on the Teton Crest Trail in 9hrs 11min (with Fred Most), and later, also with Fred, pioneered the Teton Center Punch Traverse, which follows the hydrographic crest of the Teton Range, in 43hrs 29min.

Episode 6: Brody Leven on professional adventure skiing, climate change activism, and telling powerful stories

Brody Leven is a professional adventure skier, storyteller, and climate activist. His skiing and biking adventures have taken him all over the world. Brody spends much of his time working to protect public lands and fight climate change. This passion brings him to DC almost every year to address the United States Congress. Through his sponsors, he writes and produces films that combine his love for outdoor sports with environmental advocacy.

No Doubt? No Diggity.

When the voice in your head barks, ‘You can’t do it,’ how do you respond? Pro-skier and climate activist Brody Leven has always chosen to look forward. He created a business when he was 9 years old, paid for his tuition at a Vermont ski academy, transitioned from a competition park skier to a ski mountaineer, and combined his skiing skills with the power of social media to carve out a successful career. Despite his success, Brody continued to feel that he wasn’t quite part of the cool kids club. That feeling worsened when his main sponsor declined to renew his contract at the height of his career and popularity. Rather than allowing that to derail him, Brody harnessed the rebuff. For him, leveraging self-doubt has helped him create a fulfilling life.

Episode 16 — Brody Leven

In this episode, I’m chatting with Brody Leven - a professional adventurer, activist, and skier. Brody is a unique breed of professional athlete, namely because you won’t necessarily find him hucking backflips off of gnarly cornices in Alaska in the latest TGR ski movie. Instead you’ll find him undertaking a journey to Uganda to ski the last remaining glacier on the African continent, or creating a documentary about an intense first ascent of a remote couloir in Georgia’s (the country that is) Caucusus mountains. Brody is also an avid outdoor advocate, dedicating about half of his time volunteering for ogranizations like Protect Our Winters, Heal Utah, Winter Wildlands Alliance - among others. We talked at length about the latest challenges facing activism how people can get involved and make a meaningful difference with very little effort. One of the most interesting parts of this episode for me, was a discussion around ego, which is something Brody is very thoughtful about. For him, it’s not about the look at me, look what I just did factor. It’s much more about taking on challenges and building a life around things that makes him feel alive. I think this is a really important distinction to make, one that in my opinion is the difference between short-term vain and glamour and more long-term fulfillment and happiness.
